Guided by a mysterious spirit named Gappé, Saul begins to master his gift. But power like Saul’s attracts a specific kind of darkness. Enter "The Man"—a predator who doesn’t want to stop the nightmares, but to harvest them for his own depraved pleasure.

Years later, Saul is a hollow shell of himself, trapped within the cold, granite walls of the Lakeside Sanitarium. He is "Slack-jaw" to the staff, a man lost to his own mind—until Marcie arrives. A nurse looking for a fresh start after a bitter divorce, Marcie is drawn to the silent man with the piercing amber eyes who seems to be screaming for help without making a sound.

To defeat the Man and reclaim his soul, Saul must lead Marcie into the deepest reaches of the Second Plain. But in a world where nothing is what it seems and every fear is a physical threat, Saul has to solve a final, deadly riddle before the Man turns their reality into a permanent waking nightmare.
