Carl’s world changed forever on his sixth birthday, the night the voices first spoke to him. Fearing for his sanity, his mother sought help from Dr. Emerson Sharod at the Freedom Institute—unwittingly surrendering her son to decades of isolation. Twenty-two years later, after a suspicious death shatters the Institute’s facade of safety, the voices urge Carl to do the unthinkable: escape.

Naively stepping into the neon-lit treachery of the walled city of Montford, Carl begins a perilous trek across a fractured landscape to find the mother he hasn't seen in a lifetime. Outside the walls, the world is a graveyard of "freaks," chemical shadows, and cold-blooded killers like the Folsom 99. Aided by Astrid, a resilient survivor who rescues him from the brink of death, Carl must navigate a path through militarized bases and desperate tent cities. But as he nears Saratin, the truth of what destroyed the world begins to emerge—and Carl realizes the voices in his head are the only thing that can save what’s left of it.
