It’s the doll, Ed. It’s a beacon for other spirits.
Now that I’ve finally seen Annabelle Comes Home (2019), I’m glad I didn’t see it in the theater and waited to see it in the comfort of my home. For me, it’s an unnecessary installment in The Conjuring Universe, but it’s fun with a lot happening. At one point, I wondered if they were doing auditions for future movies as they gaged viewer comments on what they saw.
It starts with an alternate version of the previous Annabelle movies’ flashback/forward scenes of Ed speaking with the college students that have Annabelle. My biggest problem with this sequence of events is the fact that they just put Annabelle in the backseat. Lorraine obviously knows that the doll is a beacon, yet she’s comfortable with it in such proximity; yeah, I don’t think so. I’m not even going to say anything about what they do when they get the doll home, because all we’ve ever been privy to in the past was Annabelle being put in the case.
Creepy shots and lighting are a lot of what makes the Conjuring Universe tick, and Annabelle Comes Home almost overdoes it at times. And as I think about it, was there a musical score? If it there was, it was faint and underwhelming. The make-up and special effects are what I expect from this franchise, and this chapter had so many different characters to work on, I’m surprised it worked out so wonderfully. And then all the bells rang, causing a chill to cover me just for a moment; it was all I needed.
With everything that I’ve just said, it’ll probably be a little surprising to hear that I liked the fuck out of this movie. There’s just something about the Conjuring Universe that sucks me in. Maybe, it’s the era and how authentic they make it look (well when they don’t use the filter, I’m so glad they didn’t do it in this one). They even threw in Captain Kangaroo, which was one of my favorites as a kid. The clothing is a great match, as are the set pieces.
I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about Annabelle Comes Home when I began watching, and as the scenes flashed before my eyes, I was once again entranced in this dark universe. I’m curious about where Ed and Lorraine went, and maybe we’ll find out with The Conjuring 3.
I give Annabelle Comes Home 4 out of 5 Stars.
